Water heated underground and pushed out on the eastern shore of Lake Batur, sitting at bath temperature all year, with the ridge you walked along two hours earlier on the far side of the pool. Most sunrise tours sell it as an add-on; the ones here build the morning around it.
What a morning on Batur costs.
Every tour on the mountain, sorted by price. Batur is one of the cheapest big mornings in Bali — what separates the bands is the transport, the group size and what happens once you are back down.

Sunrise volcano treks run all over Indonesia. The bare lava field, the lake springs on the caldera floor and a tent on the crater rim belong to this mountain.
The Black Lava Field
Batur’s last flows came down in the 1960s and 70s and the ground they covered has never grown back. It is a black field on the caldera floor with the cone standing over it, crossed by jeep tracks and quad trails, and the downhill cyclists coast through it from Kintamani. Nowhere else in Bali looks remotely like this.

The Caldera Hot Springs
On the eastern shore of Lake Batur the ground does the heating, and the water arrives at bath temperature before it ever reaches a pool. You sit in it chest-deep looking back at the ridge you were standing on at six. The two things everyone forgets are a towel and a dry change of clothes.

A Night on the Rim
The only way to get the sunset and the sunrise from the same spot: walk up in the afternoon, watch the light go behind the ridge, sleep in a tent on the crater edge and already be there when it comes back. Above the lake, the rest of the Batur caldera.
The rim road at Kintamani looks straight down into a crater thirteen kilometres across with a lake and a live cone sitting inside it. Warung tables hang over the edge, the waterfalls are half an hour back downhill, and the villages up here keep older rites than anywhere on the coast.

Sort these before you get to Bali.
Most of Batur can be arranged from a hotel lobby the day before. These cannot: they need a pickup time agreed the night before at the latest, gear that has to be carried up the mountain, or a seat in a vehicle there are only a few of.

Bali’s rain runs November to March and the mountain takes it first — the rim can be shut in cloud while the coast stays dry. Every good answer is downhill from the summit: the springs are better in the rain, the rivers are up for rafting, the waterfalls are at their loudest, and the Kintamani warungs stay open while the view comes and goes.
